Dermatitis

Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin. It describes a group of conditions that cause redness, swelling, itching, dryness, and irritation. Although symptoms may look similar, dermatitis has several types, each with different triggers, patterns, and ways of management.

Common Types of Dermatitis

1. Atopic DermatitisOften called eczema, this condition is chronic and tends to appear in childhood. It is linked to genetic factors, immune-system sensitivity, and a weakened skin barrier. Symptoms include dry patches, intense itching, and flare-ups triggered by irritants, stress, temperature changes, or allergens.

2. Contact DermatitisThis type develops when the skin reacts to substances it touches.

  • Irritant contact dermatitis results from repeated exposure to harsh materials like soaps, detergents, cleaning chemicals, or friction.

  • Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the immune system reacts to allergens such as fragrances, latex, nickel, or plants. Symptoms include redness, blistering, itching, and localized inflammation at the point of contact.

3. Seborrheic DermatitisA chronic, often recurring condition affecting areas rich in oil glands, such as the scalp, face, and chest. It causes flaky scales, redness, and itching. On the scalp, it may appear as dandruff. It is influenced by skin oils, yeast activity, and individual sensitivity.

4. Stasis DermatitisCommon in people with poor blood circulation in the legs. Fluid buildup causes swelling, dryness, discoloration, and itching, usually near the ankles or lower legs.

5. Nummular DermatitisCharacterized by round, coin-shaped patches of dry or oozing skin. It may result from skin injuries, dryness, or sensitivity to irritants.
